Ground Floor is a civic research and development practice building a global network of small business owners, builders, researchers and trainers that runs across local economies, so that what one community works out the next inherits instead of starting from zero. It emerged from a series of collaborative residencies with the Edge community in Patagonia, Cape Town and Healdsburg.
It runs field labs: beginning with problems business owners name, building inside their work, and publishing what changed, including what failed. Owners keep what gets built. The practice is organised around three stated ideas: continuous learning, collective visibility and collective agency. Its first field lab runs in Mandrem, North Goa from 11 October to 1 November 2026 alongside the state government, Edge City and local partners, with seven builders and researchers working with business owners across North Goa at no cost to the owner.
Three routes are open on its site: Goa business owners can claim a seat in the current field lab, builders and researchers can apply to join, and funders can support field labs, local operators, research and documentation.
