Decentraland's own documentation describes it as a community-driven virtual space and the world's first fully decentralized virtual world, founded in 2015 and launched publicly in 2020, with infrastructure that prevents any single company from controlling users' spaces or identities.

Delivery of DAO-approved strategy is handled by DCL Regenesis Labs, the execution arm of the DAO, which runs grant seasons and builder competitions.
